Saxophone - Model Tenor Saxophone -Buffet-Crampton
Expert: Eugene Cantera - 11/6/2009
Question I have a buffet tenor saxophone with a serial # 5008. To my best estimate it was mfg b/t 1957-1958. With buffet clarinets you can identify a low end model vs a professional model. How can you identify it with the tenor saxophone. Is there any thing that identifies it for the low end or high end instrument?
Answer Mostly by sight - if I could see a picture I could tell you. Just like a home it's the materials and the 'finish out' that often separates the men from the boys so to speak.
The Buffet Crampon (not Crampton) line included the Dynaction model- which your may in fact be. Despite some good acclaim they never really matched the heights of Selmer. There is a terrific specimen on e-bay at the moment and had an asking price of nearly $2,000. I doubt very highly it will bring that much. These horns were well enough made and often are said to have nice dark tones, but they just do not pack the punch of a truly 'professional' model horn.
