Saxophone/Lyon and Healy

I've come across what I think is a Lyon and Healy alto saxophone.  The serial numbers are 15554 with the letter "A" above and the letter "L" below the numbers.  It also says Courtier model or something like that below the engravings on the front.  I would like to know anything you can tell me about this saxophone.


Hello Jay, First of all, we see that you sax has Soldered on tonesholes..It was not made in 1914, that's the patent date for rolled tone holes. Early ones were made by Buescher. By the mid 20s they were labeled "Courturier model" and were made by Courturier of (Laporte?) IN which L&H bought in 1928. The ones after the purchase had serial numbers over 200,000.  Most of these saxophones had the clown engraving on the bell but there are some high end models that had Pan playing the pipes engraved. These had extra engraving and the neck octave key had 2 hinges. Contrary to opinion, these were not made by Martin even though the tone holes are beveled and soldered. Your sax was made by Buescher. It's a stencil, What's a stencil? you ask? Well,a stencil is a saxophone made by a major manufacturer but will have a different name on it. Music stores, schools and other businesses would order a number of saxophones from a major saxophone maker and have their name put on instead of the company that made them. A major manufacturer could also create separate brand names to compete in certain markets or may have purchased a smaller company and kept the name. Whatever the reason, for the most part these stencil horns were built with many of the features and quality of their parent company. The major saxophone companies that made stencils were Conn, Buescher, Martin. Selmer, Holton and York. Some of these companies were purchased in time and became stencils themselves. There are many ways to tell if a saxophone was produced by a certain company. Tone hole construction, G# key cluster design, key guard design, key layout, octave mechanism type, serial number markings and Iím sure their are more. Speaking of serial numbers most stencils did not follow the parent companies serial number range so it is hard to tell the year it was made. You will notice that some stencils like Wurlitzer and Lyon & Healy are listed more than once. This is because at one time or another they were made by more than one manufacturer. In that case youíll have to do more research to find out which one it is. Don't ruin your saxophones original finish! Many people have seen vintage saxophones with the finish ruined by someone using an abrasive like Tarn-x in an attempt to clean a saxophone. This will remove the lacquer right down to bare metal. You can use a high quality silver polish on silver plated horns.  BUESCHER MADE Stencils...

Your sax is worth, depending on the condition, anywhere from $550 to about $850. If it has super rare engraving, it could worth up to $950. We are talking about a saxophone made in the 1920's, made by the finest instrument craftsmen who ever lived. Good luck with your very rare sax, get it fixed up and play it.

I'm a Professional Jazz Saxophone soloist recently retired from 23 years with the USAF Band Of Flight, WPAFB, OHIO, experienced in performance, technique and equipment. I'm a third generation professional military musician, my father, Bill Koeller(1939-1997) was in the USAF 1958-1962, and played Jazz Hammond B-3 organ from 1957-1997, and my fathers Uncle, Alfred Koeller (1912-1993), was a professional Acoustic Bassist in the Army Air Corps in WWII, and also performed on Jazz Guitar, Hammond organ, Piano and tenor saxophone.
