i recently bought an Alto Sax for my daughter, i only paid a small amount for it i have since found out it could be quite valuable. Its a 1939 Brevete France et Etranger, it has Henri  Selmer Paris on it aswell i am asumming that is the maker. It has several numbers on it they are

ENGL.PAT.11.824
U.S.PATENT 2.090.011
27876
Can you please tell me if it is valuable so i can insure it at the correct rate? Thank you very much

Answer
You bought your daughter a historic valuable Selmer Paris, France Balanced Action Alto sax. If she is a beginner, keep her away from this Professional saxophone. I've seen kids drop a horn on the ground... A beginning sax student in grade school and high school needs a real beginning sax like a Yamaha 23, a Bundy or a Vito. From the web...
"SELMER Paris, BALANCED ACTION  serial number 2175135800
There is a very good reason that demand (and prices) for these horns is so high: although not without their quirks, these are wonderful professional instruments. The later examples have better intonation in the upper end than the earlier examples. They are often beautifully engraved. Silver examples bring about a 20% premium; gold plate about 30% more."
Your sax is worth depending on condition >>> Alto $ 3400
Please put this horn away until you daughter has studied the saxophone privately for about 6 years. Then, she will be ready for a pro horn. They are rare, collectible, valuable, One of a kind, and all it takes is one marching band  practice or grade school band to totally ruin this fine sax.Never allow her to use this sax in marching...Make sure the neck strap has a locking  hook.. Get her private lessons, with a student Yamaha 23 first...I have been dreaming about saxophone like this... I have played the sax for over 40 years professionally, this sax would be used by the guy in NYC playing in Broadway shows, or the Glenn Miller orchestra...I play in road bands with seasoned pro's from all over the USA, and they don't have horns as nice as yours...
Good luck!
