Hi Frances.  My questions are as follows:

Are jpg files and jpeg files the same thing?  If not, what is the difference between them, and say a gif file?  Will scanning a picture change the type of file it is, or can I change the type of file a picture is?  Thanks.  Dan

Answer
jpg and jpeg are similar, but different than a gif. The difference is the way the file is stored and the quality of the file.

When you scan a pic, you choose the type of file it is saved as. You cannot change the extension. A graphic file must be 'converted' to another format if you want to change from jpg to gif or png. Here is a page to help:
