ANSWER: Are you referring to an inquiry letter?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: No. Our assignment was to pick a question and do an inquiry on it

Answer
My understanding of inquiry is that it is a question regarding some issue of public interest. It's like a research report. You will try to answer your question and report on your findings. You are not making an argument, but rather showing all sides. There's a good Web site here: http://www.jjuriaan.com/Inquiry_Paper.htm

I suggest that you always let your teacher know if you are confused about an assignment. It will not only clarify what you are supposed to do for you, but also will show your teacher where she is unclear or needs to improve.
