I've been trying to find a (juvenile?) book like this from the 50's for a long time. I think the title was "Trek to the Stars" but not sure. The hero had to make his way through several different sections that had lost contact with each other to finally get to the control/bridge. Doing a search only brings up "Star Trek" stuff.

Heinlein's "Universe" (Astounding Science Fiction, May 1941)was not the first generation-ship story. The first one was "The Voyage That Lasted 600 Years" by Don Wilcox in the October 1940 issue of Amazing Stories.
