Science Fiction Books - SF book with all interaction monetized

Expert: Sue Kayton - 10/6/2009

Question
I don't really know how to describe what I'm looking for:  a novel, perhaps in the 70s or 80s, in which every interaction with other in monetized.

For instance, if you eat dinner at someone's house, the custom is that you leave payment for the dinner.  And so on. At first I thought it was a Harry Harrison world, but I've looked through some and can't find it.

Really would appreciate some expertise being applied here!!!!

Thanks!!!

Jack

Answer
Sorry - never read this one.  If you find it, please let me know, so I can read it too.  One of my favorite short stories is one where NOTHING is monetized.  It's called "And Then There Were None" (not to be confused with the Agatha Christie murder mystery with the same name.)  You can find this short story in the following anthology:  The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume 2A

The e-text of the story has been posted online here

The other volumes in the Sci Fi Hall of Fame are all worth reading, especially the first volume.
