Question I am looking for a Science Fiction book from what i am assuming the 1980's read it in high school, some of the few details i can recall are i think a prison ship i think crash landing on an alien planet, one of the guards that survived is a huge man of alien decent i think and one of the prisoners is a highly trained former military called a lampery....i think it is his race...sorry i cant be of more help, would really like to find and read this book again....

Deathworld by Harry Harrison
All three books have sequels if you enjoy the first in the series.
