Question
QUESTION: Hi, I just finished the Honor Harrington series by David Weber, I've been attempting to find something similar but I'm not having any luck. Are you familiar with any long sci-fi series similar to this one, or a long series that follows the same person?

ANSWER: Weldon,

Well, that is the problem, there isn't that much like the Honor Harrinton series, which I enjoy, too, BTW.  However, if you want to go back in time a bit, Poul Anderson had his Flandry of Terra series, which was quite good.

Have you read, or do you have any interest in reading, the actual Hornblower series by C. S. Forester?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I'm going to pick up the first book in the Flandry of Terra series to see how that reads. I'm a mild fan of history, but reading the reviews and basic info of the Hornblower series, doesn't seem like thats the type of book I can really dig into, it does seem a lot like the harrington series, just the general setting would make it not as interesting to me. Any non-series books that you are aware of that are similar? i.e. following one person from just starting out to making captain/admiral etc.. ?

Answer
Weldon,

There are only four books in the series, but the Vatta's War series by Elizabet Moon is very good.  I like all of her space opera.

Bill

Weldon,

The Flandry books are more like a secret agent series.  This was more popular at the time when they were written.  Mike Resnick has a series with three (?) books now, his Starship Mutiny series.  They may be doing the same thing, working the way up the ladder, but as far as I know, they are only available in hardcover.  I have started the first book and read a review of the third book.  It is something you might want to sample, but I don't know that you will like it.

Bill
