Question A friend at school is looking for this series:
"There were probably about eight to twelve in the
series and I remember checking them out when the Mira Mesa library was in its old location.
They were stories about a boy who went on adventures
with an old man who lived in a old run down house in the
neighborhood that the boy lived in. I remember that there were black and white illustrations that went along with the book and that the illustrations and contentmatter was a bit on the darker side of things. I also seem to
remember that there was teleporting involved, either
via a machine in the old man's house or through some sort of secret door in his basement. The books were suspenseful and they sometimes involved life or death situations."
Answer Sorry - never read these. The premise reminds me of the short story The Big Front Yard, by Clifford Simak. Perhaps he turned it into a series? The short story is collected in the anthology Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 2B, ed. Ben Bova, Doubleday 1973
