Question I am trying to find a book. The basic plot is that a planet of elite warriors/assassins is attacked and wiped out. Our hero is one of these assassins returning from a mission and he becomes the last of his kind. He is made super strong by surgery and tries to find out who is behind the destruction of the planet. The conclusion is a fight between himself and a man who has leathery protective plates in his head! Any ideas?

If this were a series, I would say that it might be the Sand Wars series by Charles Ingrid that was published by DAW back in the 1980s. I'm not sure about a stand alone novel, though.
