Science Fiction Books - Space Opera

Expert: Sue Kayton - 9/13/2009

Question
I love the movies and TV series Serenity, Far Scape, and Andromeda (not so much Star Wars or Star Trek).  I'm not interested in any of the movie-tie in books but am looking for books that are science-fiction adventures.  I've read Bradbury, Asimov, H.G. Wells, and others but would like more current authors.

Answer
Space Opera suggestions:

Several series by Eric Flint and David Weber

Phule's Company (and sequels) by Robert Asprin

Time Scout (and sequels) by Robert Asprin

Many books by Harry Turtledove or C.J. Cherryh

Harry Harrison (oldie but goodie - check out The Stainless Steel Rat series, and my favorite Deathworld

Infinity Hold by Barry Longyear (hard to find but worth it).  Also by Barry Longyear:  Enemy Mine (but skip the sequels and the lousy movie)

Tunnel in the Sky by Henlein (oldie but goodie)
