I've posted bunches of follow-ups answering questions that stumped the experts here; I wonder if anyone reads them? Here is another. The secone story is "Venture to the Moon", a series of vignettes by Arthur C. Clarke. The letter Z is from Ziolkowski, the name of the Russian ship. The race to the moon is from the first part, "The Starting Line". The rescue of the Russians is from the last part, "A Question of Residence".
