Subject: helium

Question
what does it comprise of and what makes baloons float

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,

Baloons float because they are filled with either Helium or hydrogen.  Hydrogen can be rather dangerous but Helium is not. Most baloons are filled with Helium.  Helium is a lighter then air gas and when captured in a baloon, will keep it afloat since its boyancy is high enough to even lift the weight of the baloon.  It is much like wood floating on water.

Helium is a gaseous element like oxygen but it only has two protons, and two electrons so it is very light in comparison to other gases.

I hope this helps.  If not please ask me more questions.

Ralph
