Subject: Explosion in nature

Question
I'm a counselor for 9-10 year olds this summer and we are looking to
incorporate nature into our programming and would love to do some sort of
science-y explosion -- do you have ideas? [and by explosion, i'm not too
particular, just want something that the kids can do and will be cool and
interesting]

thanks so much!

logan

Answer
Hi Logan,

Air pressure explosions are generally cool and safe.  You can also do the exploding soda but this could be very messy.

Of course over blown balloons will burst, you can make empty soda bottle explode buy need a lot of air pressure for that, you can make a bike tire explode but again need a lot of air pressure to make this happen too.  You can also take a balloon, and fill it to the normal range then place it between to board, jump on it and make it burst that way too. Make a real cool loud bang.

You can also do the mentos in the coke or pepsi which will produce a very cool soda gyser.

I would avoid any fireworks or chemical explosions as this would send the WRONG message and teach them something that you could regret later.

When I was a camp counselor years ago, on hot days we would have water filled balloon fights and of course we would have to pick up all of the balloon debris.
