Question MY SON IS NINE YEARS OLD, AND IS NEEDING TO KNOW TEN INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FRICTION FOR HIS HOMEWORK.
Answer Hi Alan,
1) trains have steel wheels and run on steel track. but it is the weight and friction t hat allows the wheels to turn
2) Car engines have belts to run various parts of the engine. These belts use friction to turn these other parts of the engine
3) Car tires operate on the road because of friction
4) Cars stop using breaks which use friction to stop the rotation of the wheels.
5) Humans being able to walk use friction to move use both forward and backward
5) Microwave ovens use friction by agitating the moisture in food very fast and this makes the food hot and cooks it
6) We are able to sit in a chair and not slide out because the friction keeps us put.
7) We can keep our hands warm by rubbing them together hard and fast
8) Static electricity can be built up by rubbing wool over latex. the Friction generates the electricity
9) Air conditioners work by compressing the air and forcing the heat out of it. The compression squeezes the air which by friction pushes the heat into the surrounging metal that absorbs the heat thus cooling the air.
10) Sleding would not work with out friction which generates a little bit of heat which melts the ice or snow and allows the sled to slide.
