Science for Kids - dissolving in liquids

Expert: ScienceAdviser - 7/29/2009

Question
I'm doing a science fair investigation.  Why do lollipops dissolve quicker in water than they do in apple juicy or fizzy.

Answer
Hi there,
This is a chemistry question, but I do my best to answer you based on my knowledge in that area.  Also, at the end, I have added a website that may explain much better than I do.

Well, the first thing is that lollipop is sugar and when you are dissolving sugar in water, there are more space between the water moleucles, so the sugar molecules can fit, break the bands and form new bands and get dissolved. If it is hot water, that even helps more in dissolving the sugar molecular because there is less interaction between the water molecules. Now, when you dissolve the lollipop in apple juice. The apple juice arleady has suager in the water so there is less space for more suger molecules to come in and fit the empty space between the water molecules. That is why you have hard time dissolving lollipops in apple juice.

I hope these helped. If not, feel free to contact me and I do my best to help. Also, it would be great if you rate me so the other people that like to contact me know if that I will be helpful to them.

Gloria
