Science for Kids - ultrasound and whales

Expert: Ralph Salier-Hellendag - 1/14/2005

Question
Hi
I heard that fishermen can use ultrasound as a bait to attract whales, since whales use ultrasound themselves to communicate to each other, and I would really like to find out more about this.  If you could tell me more about how ultrasound is used as bait for fishing whales or point me to some resources online about this subject, that would be appreciated.

Thank you

Answer
Katrina,

I would recommend that you look in Google.com and dogpile.com ( two search engines of many) and put in

"ultrasound whale bait" and see what comes up.

This is the first I have heard of such a thing and I consider the "fishing" of whales as immoral and wrong.
