Question i am doing a culture report about Scientology for nursing school, and i am looking for for aspects of nursing that might be influenced by scientology. could you please help me out?
Answer Hello Kyla,
This is the second question I have received on this subject in three days! Please refer to my answer to Diania for some information. That way I can add some more information in this posting!
Scientology makes its members very self absorbed. They feel that they are the source of anything that befalls them. So if they are sick they assume that, in some way, they have made it happen to themselves.
There is also another part to this - Scientology teaches that people get sick because they are in contact or beholden to someone who is evil or who is opposed to the Scientologist.
If you are going to be nursing someone who is a Scientologist then be prepared for them to be questioning themselves, looking for the reason why they did this to themself.
Fortunately most Scientologists tend to be vitamin and nutrition "aware". So if they are a "public" (as opposed to being in the most fanatical inner core, called the Sea Organization) they will tend to be on the side of organic foods so they will respond positively to nutritional and supplemental advice.
I mentioned in my other response that during recovery the Scientologist patient will push to be better today than they were yesterday, better tomorrow than they are today. You could use this to motivate them but be careful, they take it very seriously.
If you are nursing someone from the inner fanatical core - it is a whole different game. You should expect symptoms of PTSD or the effects of long term stress and bad nutrition. You will be dealing with someone who will be nervous about being outside of the place they are based. They will probably, after a few days, start having nightmares.
Scientologists do not recognize the signs of depression and will refuse any suggestion that they may need counseling or anti depressant medication. Any medication being prescribed would need to be discussed with them at length - they do not, in general, trust the medical profession.
I hope that helps. You could try asking this question at scientology.com as well. I would not normally recommend anyone going to that site who is seeking information about Scientology but this sort of question would be fine I think.
