Question My bass guitar teacher is a scientologist who doesn't believe in souls. We were trying to relate to the concept of rhythm, and I said that rhythm comes from the soul. He wholly disagreed, claiming there was only mind and body. Is this a scientology thing; as in not believing in souls?? Upon hearing this, I asked him if he'd write "(TEACHER'S NAME)'S SOUL" on a piece of paper and sell it to me for $5 without feeling uncomfortable knowing that I believed I owned him. He says he'd be fine with that. Well, I didn't buy his soul as I feel this would make me the devil. But. What do you think?
Answer Hello Kristen. Thank you for your question. From the Thorndike and Barnhart World Book Dictionary, def 1. "Soul, the part of the human being that thinks, feels and makes the body act; the spiritual part of a person as distinct from the physical. Many religions teach that in death the soul and body become separated, and the soul lives forever." From the SCIENTOLOGY TECHNICAL DICTIONARY "Thetan, the person himself-not his body or his name, the physical universe, his mind, or anything else; that which is aware of being aware; the identity which is the individual. The thetan is most familiar to one and all as YOU." "Thetan" is taken from the Greek letter "theta" which symbolizes "thought".The letter "n' was added to theta and became thetan, (Spirit or soul). No it is not a Scientology thing "not believing in souls." We know we are souls. You teacher needs a better education in Scientology. He is confusing the difference between (maybe) Dianetics which is the mental science that deals with handling he "mind" namely the "reactive mind" as opposed to handling the soul which is what Scientology handles. I hope this answers you questions. If you need to ask any more questions I will be most happy to help answer them for you. Sincerely, Jay
