I only just realized he does say "whole barley". I was using the Pearled barley and some batches were a purply brownish color and the barley I would buy in the small bags from the store did go pink.

I started my little girl on the barley formula with goats milk. Depending on the brand of pearled barley and the type of pot you use to make the barley, it will be different shades of pink. I noticed the heavier the pot (always use stainless steel) the more pink I get it.  I think people read into the color a little too much. If you cook it for the 6 1/2 hours as it calls for, it should will be fine! My little one does really well on it and I was also brought up on the formula. A friend mentioned she gets a nice pink color using a crokpot, so maybe you can try that if your pot isn't working well. Hope this helps anyone who has questions down the road.

On a side note, my daughter was constipated using soy, so I don't recommend that. My doctor said to use it, but it didn't agree with her. If you feel your kid may have a sensitive stomach, or is constipated, switch to Goats Milk.
