How Scientology culture/ religion experience death and dying? What should nurse know about about scientology member in order to facilitate culturally competent care
Answer Indira,
Thank you indeed for some very challenging and insightful questions.
1. Scientology believes that upwards of 80% of illness is psychosomatic. It believes that most illness can only be cured by addressing the spiritual problems that are causing it. Most Scientologists (in my experience) tend to be fairly "organic" when it comes to eating and health.
2. Aging is a difficult subject to address. Scientology makes no concessions about aging at all. Scientologists expect an elderly person to act like everyone else.
3. Elder people in Scientology view illness as wrong. If they are ill they are going to look for reasons inside themselves as to why they are getting sick. Scientologists - as I said in answer 1 - believe that most illness is psychosomatic. They also believe that they can get sick from being in contact with a person who is antagonistic or hostile to Scientology or to them personally.
4. Scientologists consider death to be just a small part of life and rebirth. Scientologists believe that when a person dies, the spirit should merely be encouraged to go off and seek a new body. Do not be surprised if visiting Scientologists seem impatient with the person dying.
I hope that helps, if I need to clarify anything please ask.
