About Barbara L. Baker
Expertise
I am a professor of communication at a midwest university, with expertise in film. I can answer most questions on the original "Star Wars" trilogy, and some on the newer trilogy. I also have expertise in general science-fiction film (both history and theory), especially in the United States. For movie titles, I need to have the release date (or a date range, or at least when you saw it). It is better if you note significant, major plot details and characters rather than minor plot events, and it is even better if you can recall an actor or director's name, and if it is a film or TV movie. I am less able to answer the following, although I will do my best to track down an answer for you--recent SF films, episodes of TV shows, and horror/SF hybrids (or other hybrids). I cannot answer questions about animated SF films, anime/manga, or about film collectables. Nor will I answer obvious homework (although I will point you to resources to help answer the question, if asked). I also can't help you find movie stars, movie memorabilia, or tell you how to break into the business.

Experience
Coursework in science-fiction and fantasy films, plus teaching courses in the subject for several years; I've also conducted research into SF and fantasy films and TV.

Education/Credentials
Ph.D. in Communication, with emphasis on film and rhetoric.

Past/Present Clients
My students.

Scifi Movies - Classic sci-fi creature movie

Expert: Barbara L. Baker - 11/3/2009

Question
I am looking for the title of a black and white classic sci-fi movie from (40's-60's I would guess). I used to see it on TV all the time when I was a kid.  I remember these creatures were attacking people.  The creatures resembled a mushroom shaped head on a pole for a body, they had no arms or legs (or faces I don't think)  I remember at the end of the movie the creatures had this building surrounded with people inside and they could see the creatures through the windows out in the yard.  I think they made a wierd sound and kind of swayed back and forth.  They used a clip for this movie in a McDonald's commercial last year.  I think the title may be one word.  If you could help me out with the title I would really appreciate it.  I have been going crazy!  Thanks.

Answer
Dawn, you don't say when you were a child watching this title, but it sounds like the classic 1962 SF film "The Day of the Triffids" which was all over TV when I was a child in the 1960s, and which has alien plant-like creatures attacking people after a meteorite blinds nearly everyone.  It was in actually filmed in color but I saw it in black and white because that was the type of TV we had. I recall the aliens being like tall poles with tree-like heads who did make weird sounds and sway as they surrounded people.

If this isn't the film you are looking for, I'm sorry.  Still, there aren't a lot of other possibilities for films with creatures like this (the 1963 Japanese movie "Attack of the Mushroom People" is set on a tropical island and other plant type monsters are in other types of films, many made after the time period specified).
