Scottish Culture - irish chemist migrating to us in late 1800

Expert: Thomas H McIntyre - 10/31/2008

Question
what would it be like to be a Irish chemist migrating to us in late 1800

Answer
Hi Charles, Trinity College in Ireland has produced some great chemists.  James Apjohn who received his MB degree in 1822 discovered several minerals and Robert Kane (1809-1825) was an early proponent of atomic theory and Although neither I think made it America I think they would have been in high demand.
John W Mallet (1832-1912) was one Irish chemist who made it to America and in fact spent many years in in the Southern United.  He became Supt. of the Confederate Ordinance Laboratories. The University of Alabama had a Mallet Hall and its oldest Honors program is named the Mallet Assembly in his honor.
Hope this gives you your answer!  Thanks for the question I hope you are pursuing a career in Chemistry it's a great avocation. I had many friends who went on to teach chemistry.
