Scottish Culture - Am I related to Rob Roy McGreogor?

Expert: Thomas H McIntyre - 7/15/2008

Question
My grandmother's family believes that they are related to Robert Roy McGreogor. My grandmother's madin name is LAING. I have a family tree back to John Laing Sr. from Scottland in 1799. I think instead of chaning there name to LAING, I think they could changed to SPARGUE. My great great grandmother was Jesssie Spargue and we have a story that dates back to 1628 in England to Edward Spargue. The story says "A titled ancesty he did not claim, his only pride an honest name. To be a man in all implies, free from dishonest greed in other's eyes." Will you please tell me if I am related, on what side and if I should just forget the story? Thanks

Answer
I am sorry Russell I thought I answered your question sometime ago. Robert Roy McGregor's genealogy is certainly well researched so I think you should easily obtain his genealogy.
As to your families genealogy you might have to end up hiring a genealogist from England or Scotland to confirm your or deny your family lore.  You present some credible history but you really need some professional research to confirm your ancestry. It would really take some time and money confirm your relationship.
Sorry but that's all the advice I can give you within the realm of this forum!
