My 8 year old daughter is doing a school project about her Scottish heritage. I am trying to answer the question about why and when her ancestors came from Scotland. My Grandfather was born on Prince Edward Island Canada and emigrated to the US in the 1920-30's I think.
Any information you can provide would be helpful.
Thank you,
Lynda MacDonald (maiden name McLeod)

Answer MacLeod and MacDonald are certainly famous Scottish Highland Clans who fought many battles in Scotland. Some of these battles they won and some the lost. Very often you will find that often they would fight on both sides of the battle. In the 18th century it was a hard life in Scotland and it was difficult to find food and shelter for your family. So many young men joined the army to survive.
It was during this time that Donald McLeod (b. 1740) on the Isle of Skye married Catherine McDonald. Catherine was the sister of Margared MacDonald who married John Kinlock MacDonald who emigrated in 1803. I am assuming that your family through your grandfather settled Prince Edward Island. Donald and Catherine had at least four children; Malcolm (abt 1770), Alexander (abt 1774), Murdock (abt 1775) and Roderick (abt 1776).
Alexander was an early school teacher in Prince Edward Island and married another MacLeod whose father was a Major in the British Army.
You can find more information about the McLeod's that settled Prince Edward Island and these probable ancestors I have described above through www.islandregister.com.
I hope this helps and I am sorry that your did not receive this answer before, it was certainly my fault for not checking it was processed correctly.
Sincerely;
Thomas McIntyre
