Scuba Diving - pulmanarry fibrosis wants to dive

Expert: James - 6/22/2009

Question
Hi there, My girlfriend has pulmanary fibrosis and is on oxygen 24/7.  We would love to go scuba diving but are not sure if this would be possible.  She currently is on a 6 liter/min. oxygen supply.  Can you help us please with any possible info.. Thank you very much for your time... Darryl

Answer
Hi Darryl,

You absolutely must consult your physician on this one.

It sounds to me as if diving will not be possible.  I'm sure you are aware of oxygen toxicity, given your GF's condition, and this is compounded by the pressure encountered during diving.

Again, it is critical that you consult your physician.

Thanks for your question and I wish you the best,

James
