Question
Hi - can you please advise me?

Some time ago I downloaded a jpeg or jpg file of a painting. Stupidly I changed the filename, and now I can't find it again on the internet. But, the file I have contains specific information: file size, scanner used, date, etc. What I wish to know is whether any of this internal information can be used by a search engine to narrow down the search. Or is there any search facility that looks at the content of the file, as does Duplicate File Finder on my hard drive?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Brian,

Well there is and there isn't a way for you to find it again. Hows that for a wishy washy answer. You actually would have to be able to search by HASH signature to find it, and that only works on Peer to Peer networks and the like.

Let me explain. A HASH signature in case you are not aware of it is a unique type of identifier that each and every file in the world has. Its kind of like a serial number for a file. No two different files have the same HASH signature. You can search for files by HASH signatures but only using certain programs like Peer to Peer programs and such. General search engines themselves do not have a HASH file signature search.

So if your image was found on WinMX, Bearshare, Limewire, or any other the other peer to peer then you could find it, but if not, you will not be able to search by picture content.

Hope that explains it a bit.
