Question
Express, in terms of x, the mean of (4x^2-6), (2x^2+3x), and (-13x+3).

Answer
Hi Donna,

Okay, the mean is basically the average of the three expressions, so we have to add them, then divide by 3:

   (4x^2 - 6) + (2x^2 + 3x) + (-13x + 3) = 6x^2 - 10x -3

Then dividing this by 3 gives :  2x^2 - (10/3)x - 1

That would be the mean.

Steve
