Dear Carol and Steve,

Delighted to read both the questions and answers ref MDCCCCIII, as I recently found a very old book on my bookshelf which had the publication year entered like that. I was keen to know the year but was unable to figure it out, so big thank you to you both.

I found your page as I have two small books with the date on the title page given as MDCCCCIII, and as a Maths teacher never came across this usage.  Looking at the books, 1903 would seem reasonable.

The form MDCCCCIII was used on the cover page of Rev. C. F. Burney's book entitled "Notes on The Hebrew Text of the Books of Kings" published by The Clarendon Press at Oxford in 1903.

I can help with all math questions from basic math to Calculus. Whether it`s consumer questions, or questions from high school or college students, I have probably dealt with it at some time in my career.

I have taught high school mathematics for the past 33 years in New Jersey. I am now retired in Florida.
