About John E. Pecore Power Quality Engineer
Expertise Power Quality and Lightning protection for Burgs, Fire, CCTV, and Gate access systems. I also want to hear about Back up Generator issues effecting your electronic equipment. I know all 24 manufactures of fire alarm panels. If you ask me I will tell you who I think is the best, and who is the worst. A lot has changed in 30 years, and many consumers have no idea what they are buying, and what they should expect for reliability for their systems. The question is, why are you paying for so many repairs? In the South, re-occurring revenue is extremely important. Do you fall in that category?
Experience 18 years trouble shooting every name brand in after market lightning issues.

Expert: John E. Pecore Power Quality Engineer - 11/4/2009
Question We are having constant problems with waveform error's on 2 MXL panels. Many thousands of dollars spent on new version motherboards, devices, reprogramming and Siemens labor. The Solutions being offered are not producing any results. The panel may be normal for a week or two but the waveform error's keep coming back. We have even rewired loops and split loops. For a period of time alarm devices with activating on a daily basis randomly
Is this a common problem for this panel in industrial locations with high voltage running through the facility.
Is there a solution or should we cut our losses.
Siemens do not seem to be capable of resolving this problem
thank you for your time
Answer
I have answers...
Siemens are using Transdector protectors...... 1st mistake. Also the protectors are installed inside the panel, 2nd mistake. Finally the straw that breaks the camels back they don't have a clue what they are doing. Your head is bobbing up and down by now.
Here is what you need.
(1) 120HWCP20CB
(1) Spike Block-1
(1) Power Guard...if you have a back up Generator...add this too.
These two items will deal with the issues of power being the problem and feed back loop up case ground. That is something Siemens is not addressing at this time.
Now if you have any SLC, NAC, and dry contacts or other circuits leaving the panel...you will need these devices as well.
FA30VB zones, SLC
FA30BH Bells horns or NAC at 24V DC
FA 60VB zones SLC with voltages at 28V or higher
FA 60NC for NAC,bells, horns at 28V higher and heavy current.
Put all of these low voltage protectors inside a polymer, or plastic housing. If you can not find one big enough, I have them too.
Lastly... I have some special chemicals...nickle water base paint that will help shield your wires from 60 cycle of the AC power in the plant. You need to paint this on your wires of your AC power feeding the fire alarm panel. You need a gallon of this stuff...to paint other wires as needed to shield it from EMF. It drys pretty quick.... Interesting stuff. You may or may not need it...but it won't hurt.
Most importantly...before I sell anything...I am a trouble shooter...so I will need to talk to your Siemens technician and do the SLI rule...sectionalize, localize, and Isolate the problem.
Discuss with him the wiring layout...there may be some hidden answer that now one had thought about.
Lastly...this will cost you money... nothing is free...even if you purged your pocket book already with their futile investigation, time and money.
All 26 manufactures have this problem...not 10 years ago, not 20 years ago and not 30 years ago. It is called pf capacitance and there is so little of it left that your panel can not absorb anymore access power.
Lastly...if your pockets are deep enough..($2500.00 per day plus expenses)....I could do a site survey, and give you a plan of action that will resolve the issue. But what you have said here, I may have already figured it out.
Here is a special web page for you.....
http://www.firealarmprotection.com
Not very flattering to Siemens, Edwards or Simplex...but Simplex has done $18,000.00 with me this year....I think the web page backed them into a corner with a few end users like yourself.
