I know all 24 manufactures of fire alarm panels. If you ask me I will tell you who I think is the best, and who is the worst. A lot has changed in 30 years, and many consumers have no idea what they are buying, and what they should expect for reliability for their systems. The question is, why are you paying for so many repairs? In the South, re-occurring revenue is extremely important. Do you fall in that category?

Security & Fire Protection Systems - DSC 832 Wireless Code 5

Expert: John E. Pecore Power Quality Engineer - 6/19/2009

Question
I am getting a code 5 on several wireless sensors. It comes and goes randomly. Some days no code 5, and other days 4 sensors show a code 5. I replaced batteries and that seemed to help but the problem did not go away.

The system has been installed for a few years. Do the sensors go bad? Are some batteries better than others? Is there a way to see if there is some kind of interference?

I'm stumped.

Answer
I believe your batteries are good, but I think that the sensors may have gone bad.

Ohms Law:

When the battery goes bad...what happens is the voltage drops and the current increases.  Your power supply then over heats.... and component failure may happen.

One sensor unlikely....this issue.  Many sensors this could happen (Law average).  You could have dirt and other contaminants that might cause the sensor to malfunction.

You could be right, you might have a couple or one bad battery. The Law of averages could be in this factor as well.

Obviously, I am not there to take a look at it....so I could only give you an intelligent guess.

bugs: Ants leave a trail of acid behind them, and if there is any rosin on the PC board it is a sweet substance.  So when they traps across the board, they short your wires, battery drains and sensor dies. So Bugs could be a problem.

A roach was discovered in an AC thermostat in my mother-in-laws apartment.  The AC would not function because when the AC turned on it shorted over the roach, killed it and it oooosed out and damaged the board.

I have given you examples of what might have happen....it is up to you to find the source of your problem.

I am a power quality and Lightning Protection Engineer in the Burg, Fire, CCTV and Gate Access industry.  The questions I think you asked, barely touched on my area, but I suspect there is more to it.
