Security & Fire Protection Systems - DSC Power 832

Expert: Dave Neuweiler - 6/30/2009

Question
My alarm has been disconnected for some time.  I have connected it now and changed the battery but when I plug in the transformer, both the panels show trouble and beep continuously.  I can't get it to stop, nor check the error codes as nothing appears on either panel.  The panel is responsive a few times touching the numbers (i can hear the beeps) and then nothing no beeps, but the trouble light remains and the beeping noise...

Please help :)

Answer
Hello Dave, and thanks for writing.

There are a lot of unknowns here, and to me the greatest one is the reason that the system had been disconnected earlier -- was there a problem with the control panel? If so, your efforts to bring the system up may be futile.

But there are a few things you can do. First, let's square away the power. Open the panel and disconnect one wire for the bell or siren (terminal 5 or 6). Connect the battery and AC, and let the battery charge for 3 or 4 hours. If the keypads continue to annoy, temporarily disconnect them. Pulling the red or black wire from terminals 7 or 8 should do this.

After allowing the battery to charge, reconnect the keypad and see if you have any control -- for example, being able to see system troubles with the * 2 command. (Here's a link to the user's manual with instructions on how to do that: http://cms.dsc.com/download.php?t=1&id=10060)

If you've regained the use of the keypads, you'll have to interpret the trouble codes and solve those problems. Also, reconnect the bell circuit... if the bell or siren sounds, there may be a fire or panic zone in trouble, and you'll have to address that as well.

But keep in mind that the motherboard may also be bad, so if you don't have success with these basic steps, hiring a technician is the next step.

I hope this helps!

Best Regards,

Dave
