Security & Fire Protection Systems - hard wired & battery smoke detectors in a large condo building

Expert: Steven Burman - 7/5/2009

Question
My smoke detectors are hard wired & have batteries. One "chirped" for an hour on and off this morning, then stopped. The battery has been in for at least 2 years and I think is going out. To get to the battery it looks like I will need to pull a "plug-like" attachment out of the hatch/cover of the detector holding the wires going up into the ceiling to open the battery hatch. If I pull this plug of wires, will I set off the alarm system?

Answer
Rick,

Probably not. I would say absolutely not, but those words have bitten me a few times in the past. The interconnect wiring on those types of SD is so if one unit goes into alarm, they all will sound. The worst that should happen is you get a trouble signal at the main alarm control. If it is a monitored system, expect a call from the monitoring company regarding the trouble signal. A way to avoid this would be to call them beforehand, and tell them to put the system on "test", change the batt, test the system, then have it taken off test at the monitoring company.

Hope this helps.
