Security & Fire Protection Systems - Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Expert: Steven Burman - 9/25/2009

Question
Could a dead battery set off a carbon monoxide detector even though it is also plugged into a wall? Should we be worried if after we replaced the battery, the alarm stopped going off?

Answer
Vicki,

Yes, the back-up battery going low will cause a "trouble" beep to come from the detector even though it still has household current, and the beeping will stop when the battery is replaced. There should be a "test" button on the detector, just push that to ensure the detector is functioning properly.

You should test the detector at least once a month (smoke detectors as well).

Hope this helps,

Steve Burman
