Security & Fire Protection Systems - Discontinue ADT Service

Expert: Steven Burman - 9/5/2009

Question
If I discontinue my ADT home alarm monitoring service, will the alarm still work and it just won't be monitored by ADT?

Answer
Roger,

Not a simple question. There are several factors at work -

Do you own or just lease the system?

You might think you own it, but check your contract very carefully.

Are you under contract for the monitoring?

If you signed an agreement for anything other than month-to-month, you will have to fulfill the contract terms.

If you own the equipment, and you are not under contract, then yes, the system should still function as a "local only" type of alarm. The monitoring company most likely has the ability to change the codes remotely, "locking" you out from use of the system, however this incurs a huge liability on their part, so it is unlikely that they will. You will need a couple of slight modifications to the system, or you will get "failure to communicate" trouble signals at the keypad.

If you aren't under contract, call ADT and tell them you wish to discontinue monitoring, see what they tell you, and get back to me if you need more advice.

Hope this helps,

Steve Burman
