Security & Fire Protection Systems/Fire Alarm Failure

Hi...yesterday we had 3 Kidde Model 1275 smoke alarms go off simultaneously in our home.  No fire/smoke visible at all.  The alarms screeched constantly until we removed them. When we tried new batteries the the problem continued. All the alarms were installed in 2002 and have worked perfectly until now....out of the 5 total installed, only two remained unaffected.  Could this be a serious situation or just old age????

Thanks for your help, Don

Sounds to me like one of them may be defective, and since they're all interconnected, if one goes, they all go.  The unit that's actually in alarm will have the green light flashing.  If this isn't indicating, then unplug them all.  With the batteries inserted, and the units disconnected from the ceiling do they still sound?  If not, then is your home sprinklered?  Check the sprinkler flow switch to make sure it hasn't activated or the "dongle" that interfaces with your smoke alarms (usually installed at the first detector in line from the flow switch).
