Security & Fire Protection Systems - smoke alarm chirps

Expert: Dave Neuweiler - 4/23/2006

Question
I noticed you've had several inquiries regarding smoke alarms that chirp about 4 times once every 10-15 seconds.  This happens randomly during all hours of the day and night.  Firex model AD.

Do you have any updates on causes or solutions to this issue?

Thanks
Mickey

Answer
Hello Mickey, and thanks for writing.

I have noticed quite a few smoke detector questions of late. I have no idea why -- and I have no new ideas about causes or solutions.

When I get questions such as these, I search for the owner's manual online. That gives me any diagnostic clues that the detector might provide. For example, according to the manual, FIREX AD gives 4 beeps per second when the test button is pressed. I'm assuming you're not doing that.

So, aside from the standard advice to ensure there's a good battery, and to clean the detector, there's little else to do besides change the detector out.

Not much help here, Mickey...

Best Regards,

Dave
