Question My husband came home with a rose of sharon from one of his customers. It is small still a seedling I think the leaves are turning yellow. How often and how much watering does this need. I am wondering if putting it in a different pot will help and also I heard they do well in cold weather. Is this true and does this mean it can stay outside on my porch all winter through snow or is it better indoors until spring. Thank You.
Answer Hi Lisa,
Thanx for your question. Rose-of-Sharon is also botanically known as Hibiscus syriacus. It is a deciduous and hardy member of the Hibiscus family. It can be rather invasive as it reseeds prolifically but you can keep this down by keeping the area around it consistently mowed. The leaves on the seedling are turning yellow because the seedling is preparing itself to go dormant for the winter. Keep the potted plant protected from the north wind. If you have an unheated garage or shed, I would put the pot in there and water once a week. Otherwise, I would pot the pot against the south or east side of the house, mulch it with straw and make sure it gets watered once a week. I hope this helps.
