AboutTom Alonzo Expertise I have been growing plants from seeds for at least 20 years. I have grown literally hundreds of different kinds of vegetables, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, tropicals, some cacti, water plants, iris, rose, lilies, cannas, etc. I enjoy starting from seed.
Experience I've been growing my own seeds for 20 years with indoor propagation equipment I built myself. I am also an Allexperts volunteer on the perennial forum. I have completed the Master Gardener course through the Kansas State University Extension. I have experience with a wide variety of seeds and I have also read through Norm Deno's books on seed germination.
Question I have my cherry trees started from seed. What is the best way to winter them their first year?? In a pot set in the ground or just leave them in the 4" tall planter I have them started in?? We live in upstate NY
Answer Hi Janet,
Thanx for your question. Some cherry varieties are not hardy to upstate New York. Do you know what variety you have? If I were you, I would wait until the tree goes dormant in the early winter and then I would store it in an unheated shed or garage where temps will fall to at least 40 or below but not below zero F. Keep the pot watered just enough to keep the plant alive. It won't need a lot of water but enough that it doesn't dry out completely. The key is to keep the roots from freezing. I hope this helps.
