I have experience with a wide variety of seeds and I have also read through Norm Deno's books on seed germination.
Question I have a few kumquat seedlings from seeds, germinated on my own and I'm very curious when will they start to produce fruits? After how many years will kumquat from seed bear fruits for the first time? Thank You for answer.
Answer Hi Marta,
Thanx for your question. It will take 5-7 years for your kumquat seedlings to grow into a tree and produce seedlings. In the U.S., most kumquat trees have been grafted onto the hardier trifoliate orange which is very cold hardy. However, the kumquat is only hardy down to USDA Zone 8 which includes the Gulf South of the US and some parts of the desert southwest. The kumquat is not frost hardy. You can keep it in a large container and maintain it at about 4-5 feet tall. I had one for many years in my Midwestern climate and brought it in every winter. It bloomed but never produced fruit. A friend of mine who gave me the plant had it fruit for him several times. I hope this helps.
