About Tom Alonzo
Expertise
I have been growing plants from seeds for at least 20 years. I have grown literally hundreds of different kinds of vegetables, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, tropicals, some cacti, water plants, iris, rose, lilies, cannas, etc. I enjoy starting from seed.

Experience
I've been growing my own seeds for 20 years with indoor propagation equipment I built myself. I am also an Allexperts volunteer on the perennial forum. I have completed the Master Gardener course through the Kansas State University Extension. I have experience with a wide variety of seeds and I have also read through Norm Deno's books on seed germination.

Seeding and Propagation - planting jacaranda seeds

Expert: Tom Alonzo - 9/29/2009

Question
Do I simply plant seeds in soil?  Do I water a lot?
Sunlight??

Answer
Hi Marilynn,
Thanx for your question.  I've planted these seeds before that I received from Portugal.  I beautiful tree that is not hardy in most of the U.S. or Canada.

Plant the paper seeds on the top of soil and lightly cover.  Keep the medium damp but not soggy.  Germination occurs quickly about 10-15 days sometimes less depending upon how warm it is.  Temps should be around 75°F/24°C for best results.  Needs to be grown under lights.  I used 40-watt shop lights suspended about 8 inches above the pot.  Then they will need direct sunlight.  I hope this helps.
Tom
