About Rob Hill
Expertise
My specialty is recalling specific quotes and linking them to the episodes in which they aired. I am also well versed in the chronology of the episodes, the seasons in which each episode appeared, the titles of every episode, and which guest stars have appeared in certain episodes. I also own all of the DVDs that have come out so far and have seen all of the inside looks and blooper segments many times.

Experience
I have seen every episode at least ten times. (I would estimate that I've seen 80% to 90% of the episodes at least thirty or forty times each.) I think Seinfeld is the greatest sitcom ever made and I would like to help others enjoy the show the same way I have!

Question
What was the secret code word George and Jerry used in the Answering Machine episode where they had to change Georges message in his girlfriends Apt? I think it is tippy toe but my sis says lemontree. Who's right?

Answer
Hi Bob,

Technically it's "Lemon Tree", but in a sense both you and your sister are right.

When George and Jerry are outside the building discussing the plan, George initially suggests saying "tippy toe".  After Jerry dismisses that idea, George says he'll sing a song.  George suggests the song "How do you solve a problem like Maria?".  Jerry dismisses that idea as well since he isn't familiar with the song.  Jerry then suggests the song "Lemon Tree", to which they eventually both agree.

However, when the moment comes, George panicks and actually shouts out, "Uh, tippy toe!  Tippy toe!" before catching himself and then shouting "Lemon Tree!"

This episode, Season 2's The Phone Message, is one of the best of the early years in my opinion.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
