Self Defense/about rob roy, again

Question
Why does Archibald allow that guy to shoot towards him during the scene then  he wants to rob him of is money? Sounds counterintuitive, and, aren't sociopaths supposed to be calculated and egotistical?

Answer
Because that's what the writers wanted him to do.

An argument could be made it demonstrated that Archie wasn't a cowardly sociopath, but a brave one. Which would establish why a duel instead of hunting Rob Roy and shooting him in the back.

A lot of reality is sacrificed in the name of dramatic narrative.
