Self Help Books/older adult issues, dep

Hi Isabel!
My mom and sister have been caregiving for my Dad with Alzheimer's for the past 10 or 11 yrs.  My mom feel and broke her hip, so he got worse and we had to put him in the nursing home.  He is now much further along; staying in bed all the time, talks a lot, but all gibberish, etc. Then mom fell and broke her wrist. She is now back home. My sister is going to stay with her till the end. My sister works 3 days a week. Mom is fine by herself some.  She's getting around better and better, but not the same, of course. She was once a vivacious caring helper in her church and with music and friends and of course, Dad. Now she's depressed (won't get help but on some anti depressants from GP) I'd like to get her "not to deep" self help books, like devotional ones maybe. Ones that deal with being in the autumn of your life, a new life. Maybe with ideas of ways she could help people from her home.  I'm just at a loss as to what search words to use to get to the right books. This is a first for me!!!  Any ideas?

I cannot say I have read any books that directly match what you describe but I did some searching and found some options. I also included a few that I a familiar with that meet some of the criteria you are looking for (I put a * by them).

Dealing with Depression:
-6 self-help books for depression -
-I want to change my life -
*Do One Thing Different by Bill O'Hanlon
-Mindful Way Through Depression  - also seems to have a spiritual componet to it -

Not sure what spiritual or religious background you wanted the devotional to come from so here are some that stood out
-Dealing with depression from a Catholic perspective:
-Dealing with Depression Daily Devotionals -
-Traveling Light Releasing the Burdens You Were Never Meant to Bear by Max Lucado -

Aging & Living Life to the Fullest:
*Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (also available as a movie) - it looks at death issues too so you would want to make sure it would be helpful for your mom or if it would make matters worse
- Aging Well (book) -
- Healthy Aging - seems to be a diet, exercise, & health focus -
- Aging into Bliss -
- 7 strategies for  positive aging -
- Nearing home: life, faith, & finishing well by Billy Graham -

Finding volunteer opportunities:

Inspirational (Christian) Fiction:
*When Joy Came to stay by Karen Kingsbury - I think this is her book that deals with a woman dealing with depression and some issues she has as a woman of faith - a Christian woman - dealing with depression
*Donovan's Daughter by Lori Wick - the whole book does not relate but Marcail's mother-in-law is bed ridden and has been for years but yet she finds ways to minister to others - I thought of the story when I read your question and explanation of your mother's condition

Sorry for the delay I thought I had sent my reply to this question.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,

I can answer questions about self-help books dealing with relationship problems, emotions, dealing with life's difficulties, etc.

I have read various self-help books.

This area is more about experience and what one has read versus formal education.
