AboutKendra Perry Expertise I have been a Seventh-day Adventist all my life, and attended SDA schools growing up. I am now married to an SDA pastor. I can answer questions on SDA history, beliefs, culture, and trivia.
Question Seventh Day Adventists, like other denominations use 1Tim 2:9 & 1Pet 3:3 to forbid, prohibit or discourage wearing jewelry because it is seen as sinful, bad, or attention seeking behavior unbecoming of Christians.
Aren't these 2 scriptures actually Hebrew idioms (figures of speech) which are actually emphasizing inward adornment but not eliminating outward adornment?
It seems to be the same type of idiom used in Joel 2:13 and many other scriptures: Rend (also) your heart, and not (only) your garments, and turn unto Yah. Also see Sam. 3:31
What, if any, other scriptures do the SDAs use to support a no-jewelry doctrine? Thank you.
Answer Hi, Yael,
Angel Manuel Rodriguez of the Adventist Biblical Research Institute has written a book on this topic. It takes a detailed look at jewelry in the Bible, taking the original languages and cultural context into account.
