Question I have been suffering from IBS for awhile now, and am very confused by all the diets and advice out there. I had a 3-day stool test done & it shows that I am very low in good bacteria & that I harbor 3 "possible pathogenic" bacteria. I have tons of gas pain and sometimes diarrhea as my main symptoms. What advice would you give me based upon SDA health/diet principles to combat this? I need to maintain or gain weight, so can't eliminate carbs, e.g., or fast.
Thanks so much!
Maggie
Answer Hello Maggie,
I certainly can understand your frustration, embarrassment, and confusion that seems to accompany this problem. I am not a physician and so cannot prescribe or assume to daignose other problems of which IBS is symptomatic. However, research has shown that generally, all gastroentero problems are diet related and may be symptomatic of emotional/mental stress factors in ones life.
My first suggestion is to go to an MD who is a specialist in this area. There are medications that can be taken to alliviate the bloating, diarrhea, and gas pain.
My second suggestion is to go to and get a second opinion.
Get a thorough physical checkup if possilbe or have them run some chem panels to see what is going on with your enzymes and hormones. You probably should have your gall bladder checked as well - it may not be functioning at its optimun.
Food wise - you might enjoy eating the many flavors of yogurt that is out there today. Some say that it may help restore the "good bacteria" in the intestinal tract.
Fresh fruit, lots of dark green vegetables, 1 cup of almonds a day may help to slow down the diarrhea.
If you would like to learn more about eating healthy, I can recommend getting in contact with one of these centers closet to you. They have physicians on staff as well.
