Sewing - shortening pants between waist and crotch

Expert: Vinette de Phillipe - 3/19/2008

Question
QUESTION: Is there a way to shorten pants and slacks between waist and crotch?

ANSWER: HI Saadia,
Is the problem that the crotch is too long? if this is the problem, then by using the inseam you can shorten the crotch area.

turn the pants inside out, take up some of the fabric at the center inseam.  taper to the thigh area.   baste this change. try the pants on, if ok then stitch the new seam.  If not make adjustment and retry them.

QUESTION: the crotch seems to be okay but usually the waistband is up around my ribs  I am short in the body with almost no room between ribs and hips.  I will try your method though but I am not convinced that this will work.

Answer
HI Saadia
I agree, your problem is not the one i gave instructions for.

What you will need to do is remove the waistband, mark on the pants where you want the waist to be.  cut off the part you do not want, leaveing enough for seam allowance.

replace the waist band.

If there are pockets, you might need to relocate them.  If you need help with this pleasse let me know.
