Sewing - machines

Expert: Vinette de Phillipe - 8/18/2008

Question
My wife is looking into a sewing machine and I was wondering what to look for in one?  She will not use it to much and mainly for general sewing.  Mechanical or electronic?  What functions?  Thanks

Answer
Hi Landon
Almost any low end priced machine is good.  I would stay away from Singer as I had one recently and it froze up on me.  I now have 2 brother machines, less than $200.00 each and have no problems with them.

One is mechanical and the other is electronic.

In my humble opinion, she would probably like one that has some decorative stitches.

The brands I would look at are New Home, Brother, Janome, Phaff  These are all good.

I purchased my machines from Wal-mart.

YOu might want to take your wife to a shop that sells machines and let her try out them to see what she likes best.  Some times you can get a good refurbished machine for a lot less than a new one.

Good hunting.
