QUESTION: I thought if I mitered the corners, the cloth wouldn't come off while I am playing Bridge.

ANSWER: You do not have to miter the top of the cover, but create corners on the sides to hold the cover in place.

Is this what you mean?

QUESTION: But how do you create corners?

Answer
fabric on table

I hope I can help....

You have not explained what you have done or are trying to do so, I have my own vision.

Lay the fabric on top of the table wrong side out let the fabric hand over the ends of the table.

Where the corners are there will be extra fabric.

Pin straight down from the corner toward the floor,  The extra fabric you are pinning may look like a triangle depending on how much fabric you have.

You do not have to make the top and stitch on the sides, it can be done all in one piece.

What type of fabric are you using?
